Canada Expands Pathways for Sudanese Refugees: What You Need to Know
Canada is reaffirming its commitment to providing refuge for those fleeing the devastating conflict in Sudan. The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, has announced significant expansions to existing resettlement and family-based pathways, offering hope and stability to thousands.

Key Updates for Sudanese Refugees:
Increased Refugee Resettlement:
Canada will resettle up to 4,000 Sudanese government-assisted refugees by the end of 2026.
An additional 700 Sudanese refugees will be supported through private sponsorship.
Specifically 350 privately sponsored applications by groups of five and community sponsors will have the refugee status determination document requirement waived.
Expanded Family-Based Pathway:
The number of applications accepted for processing under the family-based permanent residence pathway will increase from 3,250 to over 5,000.
This will allow approximately 10,000 people to be welcomed under this pathway.
The requirement for the Canadian anchor to reside outside of Quebec has been removed, but until April 17, 2025 IRCC will reserve 500 applications for people with anchors in Quebec, that intend to live outside of Quebec.
Applications will begin being accepted on February 25, 2025.
