If you are looking at Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry, one number will follow you through the entire journey: your Comprehensive Ranking System score. The CRS is the points-based tool that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses to rank every candidate in the Express Entry pool and decide who receives an invitation to apply.
The CRS is split into four sections, and each one contributes to your total out of a maximum of 1,200 points.
Your final CRS score is simply the sum across these four sections.
IRCC holds Express Entry draws on a regular cadence. Each draw sets a cutoff CRS score, and every candidate in the pool who meets or exceeds that cutoff receives an Invitation to Apply. Some draws are general and invite across all programs, while others are category-based and focus on specific occupations, French-speaking candidates, or a particular program such as the Canadian Experience Class.
Exact cutoffs move from draw to draw and depend heavily on the program being targeted, so chasing a single magic number is not useful. As a rough anchor, scores in the low to mid 400s have historically been competitive in general draws, while category-based and program-specific draws can land well below that. Treat these figures as context, not as a guarantee, and check recent draw history before drawing conclusions.
