The route most people from India take, the mistake to avoid, and the facts that change because you are applying from India, each read from the official page it links.
For a skilled worker in India, New Zealand residence runs through a job. The Accredited Employer Work Visa needs a job offer from an employer Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has accredited to hire migrants, and the residence visa that can follow, the Skilled Migrant Category, also needs a skilled job or job offer with such an employer, plus points for a recognised qualification, pay or registration to practise an occupation in New Zealand, or enough work experience for one of its other pathways. Without that job, the expression of interest, the online form that starts the process, cannot be submitted.
Two things can be arranged from India before the job search. The first is the qualification: INZ's list of qualifications exempt from assessment names only certain Indian institutes, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology, the National Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, and leaves out MBAs, so other degrees generally need an International Qualification Assessment from NZQA, New Zealand's qualifications authority. NZQA verifies the documents first, accepting them only from the university's records office or a verification service, never as certified copies, apostilled or notarised ones included. The second is an English test taken in person at a test centre, since INZ does not accept tests taken at home. The police certificate can wait, because INZ wants it recent when you apply.
The mistake to avoid is paying an agent in India for a New Zealand job offer or for visa advice. INZ warns that job offer scams are common in India and South Asia, that employers and agents cannot charge you for a job, and that it will decline an Accredited Employer Work Visa if you or your agent offered money for the offer. Anyone advising on a New Zealand visa must be licensed by the Immigration Advisers Authority or exempt, and working outside New Zealand exempts an adviser only for student visa applications. INZ returns applications from an adviser who is neither, so check the Authority's register before paying anyone.
The Skilled Migrant Category sets no settlement-funds figure: it checks a skilled job offer and a points test instead.
A qualification from India is assessed for New Zealand by one of these organisations: New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), International Qualification Assessment.
A Police Clearance Certificate, issued through the Passport Seva system of India's Ministry of External Affairs for people in India, or by an Indian embassy or consulate for people living abroad.
New Zealand has no working holiday scheme for citizens of India today.
Tests New Zealand accepts with centres in India include IELTS General Training, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET and Cambridge English.

Compared with other people born overseas, those born in India are most concentrated in the Waikato region, among the regions where at least 5% of them live.
