The route most people from South Africa take, the mistake to avoid, and the facts that change because you are applying from South Africa, each read from the official page it links.
The residence statistics of Immigration New Zealand (INZ) show South Africans among the nationalities most often granted residence since 2016, mostly through skilled and work-based routes rather than family ones. Both skilled routes need a job with an employer INZ has accredited: the Skilled Migrant Category, the residence visa for skilled workers, which also needs points from a qualification, New Zealand registration or pay, or enough skilled work including time in New Zealand; and the Green List of roles New Zealand needs workers for, which can lead to residence straight away or after a period of work. Such a job offer also underpins the Accredited Employer Work Visa, a work visa tied to that one employer.
The job offer comes first: the employer needs accreditation and an approved job check for the role, then sends you a link to apply. Next, check your qualification against INZ's exemption list for South Africa, which covers bachelor's degrees without honours and qualifying master's and doctoral degrees from the universities it names, but not honours degrees or master's degrees in business administration or leadership; those need an assessment by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). An engineering degree accredited under the Washington Accord, an international agreement South Africa's engineering council joined in 1999, needs no assessment if awarded since then. Time the police certificate: INZ warns that it can take months, yet it must be recent when you apply.
The mistake to avoid, on the work route most South Africans take, is treating the work visa as open-ended. Total time on Accredited Employer Work Visas is capped according to the job's skill level and pay, and at the cap you must spend time outside New Zealand before returning on another. Skilled Migrant pathways that count New Zealand work experience need it in hand, and changing employer means applying to INZ again, so before accepting a job, check that its skill level and pay can carry you to residence within that limit.
The Skilled Migrant Category sets no settlement-funds figure: it checks a skilled job offer and a points test instead.

In the 2023 census, 46% of people born in South Africa who live in New Zealand lived in the Auckland region, more than in any other region.
Compared with other people born overseas, those born in South Africa are most concentrated in the Bay of Plenty region, among the regions where at least 5% of them live.
