The route most people from the United States take, the mistake to avoid, and the facts that change because you are applying from the United States, each read from the official page it links.
Americans can visit New Zealand without a visa, but not to work for a New Zealand employer. Younger Americans who normally live in the United States can apply for the working holiday visa for US citizens, which needs no job offer and allows temporary jobs, though not a permanent one. For a lasting move, the key is an accredited employer, a business Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has approved to hire migrants: its job offer supports the Accredited Employer Work Visa, and the Skilled Migrant Category, New Zealand's residence visa for skilled workers, requires a job with such an employer too.
Check your degree first: the Skilled Migrant Category gives points for it only once it is recognised. INZ's list of qualifications exempt from assessment covers bachelor's, master's and research doctoral degrees from the US institutions it names, but not professional doctorates such as the Juris Doctor or the Doctor of Pharmacy, nor master's degrees shorter than the length it sets; those need an International Qualification Assessment from NZQA, New Zealand's qualifications authority. Then look for work with accredited employers, whose list INZ publishes; once INZ approves an employer's check of the job, the employer sends you the link to apply. Request the FBI's Identity History Summary, the US police certificate, close to applying, since INZ wants it recent; if it records a conviction only as an abbreviation, or leaves out the sentence you received, add state or court records giving the full details.
The mistake to avoid is losing the working holiday visa at the border. Because Americans can travel to New Zealand visa-free, INZ tells working holiday travellers from visa-waiver countries to tick "I hold a temporary entry class visa" in the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, the arrival form every traveller must complete. Without that answer INZ may grant a visitor visa at the border instead, cancelling the working holiday visa, which INZ grants only once, even if it is never used.
The Skilled Migrant Category sets no settlement-funds figure: it checks a skilled job offer and a points test instead.
A qualification from the United States is assessed for New Zealand by one of these organisations: New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), International Qualification Assessment.
An Identity History Summary from the FBI (the US Federal Bureau of Investigation), requested online. The check is based on your fingerprints, which you can have taken at a participating US Post Office.
New Zealand runs a working holiday scheme for citizens of the United States aged 18 to 30, for a stay of up to 12 months.
Tests New Zealand accepts with centres in the United States include IELTS General Training, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET and Cambridge English.
For New Zealand's skilled residence visas, a citizen of the United States who has spent at least 5 years working or studying in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States may not need a test at all.
In the 2023 census, 31% of people born in the United States who live in New Zealand lived in the Auckland region, more than in any other region.
Compared with other people born overseas, those born in the United States are most concentrated in the Otago region, among the regions where at least 5% of them live.
