The route most people from the United Kingdom take, the mistake to avoid, and the facts that change because you are applying from the United Kingdom, each read from the official page it links.
For British citizens within its age range, a first step into Canada that needs no job offer is International Experience Canada (IEC), Canada's work and travel programme for young people. Its Working Holiday permit lets you work for most employers anywhere in Canada, Young Professionals needs a job offer that builds your career, and IRCC, Canada's immigration department, lets British citizens take part twice, in any category. Skilled work on those permits can later count toward the Canadian Experience Class, a permanent residence route inside Express Entry, the online system that invites the skilled workers with the most points to apply.
The IEC steps come first: an online profile places you in a pool of candidates, and accepting an invitation starts a short, fixed deadline for the work permit application, which usually asks for police certificates. ACRO, the UK police records office, sends its certificate by post only, so order it early; if it is late, IRCC accepts proof that you ordered it and asks for the certificate later. A UK degree earns Express Entry points only with an educational credential assessment, a report on what it equals in Canada from an organisation IRCC designates. WES, one of them, accepts your transcript or Higher Education Achievement Report only through the university's electronic record service or in an envelope the university sealed, showing the date your degree was conferred.
The mistake to avoid is assuming every job on a working holiday counts toward permanent residence. The Canadian Experience Class counts only paid work in the skilled categories (TEER 0 to 3) of the National Occupational Classification, Canada's list of jobs sorted by the training they require, and never self-employment. In the job table on IRCC's Find your NOC page, bartenders, hotel front desk clerks and food and beverage servers fall outside those categories, while cooks and chefs are inside them. If residence is the goal, check a job's category there before accepting it.
Express Entry asks a single applicant to show CAD 15,263 in settlement funds, about £8,092 at the latest cached exchange rate; larger families need more.
A qualification from the United Kingdom is assessed for Canada by one of these organisations: World Education Services (WES), International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS), International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES) and Comparative Education Service (CES).
A Police Certificate from ACRO, the criminal records office of the UK's National Police Chiefs' Council; people living in Scotland and Northern Ireland apply there too. You apply online, and the certificate is sent by post.
Canada and the United Kingdom have a youth mobility agreement. Through International Experience Canada, citizens of the United Kingdom up to age 35 can apply in these categories: Working Holiday, Young Professionals and International Co-op (Internship).
Tests Canada accepts with centres in the United Kingdom include IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada and TCF Canada.
In the 2021 census, 52% of immigrants born in the United Kingdom lived in Ontario, more than in any other province or territory.
Compared with other immigrants, those born in the United Kingdom are most concentrated in British Columbia, among the places where at least 5% of them live.
