The route most people from Sri Lanka take, the mistake to avoid, and the facts that change because you are applying from Sri Lanka, each read from the official page it links.
In the year to July 2026, Stats NZ counted Sri Lankans among the largest groups of migrants arriving in New Zealand, and among the nationalities whose arrivals most outnumbered their departures. A skilled worker's route begins with a job offer from an employer Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has accredited to hire migrants, which supports the Accredited Employer Work Visa, a work visa tied to that employer that INZ says can lead to residence. Residence can then come through the Skilled Migrant Category, which needs a job or job offer from an accredited employer and, on its points pathway, enough points from a qualification, pay or New Zealand registration, topped up if needed by skilled work in New Zealand.
Check your qualification first, because the Skilled Migrant Category counts one gained overseas only if NZQA, New Zealand's qualifications authority, has assessed it or it appears on INZ's list of qualifications exempt from assessment. The list for Sri Lanka names universities such as Colombo and Peradeniya, and covers their bachelor's degrees and research master's degrees from the years it sets, but it leaves out external degrees, which carry the word "external" on the certificate and transcript, the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, MBAs and master's degrees earned by coursework alone. Anything off the list needs an NZQA assessment; book an English test alongside, as the Skilled Migrant Category requires English too.
The mistake to avoid is a police certificate that covers only part of your life in Sri Lanka. For Sri Lanka, INZ's police certificate tool says to state on the application that the certificate must cover the time since your birth. The Sri Lanka Police's online application prints only the periods you enter: each address goes in separately, with its police area and dates, and one left out never appears on the certificate. List every address since birth, because change requests are accepted only briefly after submission.
The Skilled Migrant Category sets no settlement-funds figure: it checks a skilled job offer and a points test instead.
A qualification from Sri Lanka is assessed for New Zealand by one of these organisations: New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), International Qualification Assessment.
A Police Clearance Certificate from Sri Lanka Police Headquarters, applied for online and sent by registered post to the address you give. Sri Lankans who left for good as children, before getting a National Identity Card, apply through a Sri Lankan embassy or high commission.
New Zealand has no working holiday scheme for citizens of Sri Lanka today.
Tests New Zealand accepts with centres in Sri Lanka include IELTS General Training, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET and Cambridge English.
In the 2023 census, 55% of people born in Sri Lanka who live in New Zealand lived in the Auckland region, more than in any other region.
Compared with other people born overseas, those born in Sri Lanka are most concentrated in the Wellington region, among the regions where at least 5% of them live.
