Before you apply
1Get an International Qualification Assessment (IQA)Recommended
Have NZQA assess your overseas qualification against the New Zealand framework for skilled residence.
2Confirm your qualification's NZ equivalenceRecommended
An NZQA recognition statement shows where your qualification sits on the New Zealand framework.
3Obtain occupational registrationRecommended
Some New Zealand occupations require registration with a professional body before you apply for a visa.
4Accountants: check the CPA Australia routeRecommended
From 24 August 2026 Immigration New Zealand also recognises accountants who can do the work of a Qualified Statutory Accountant in New Zealand and hold membership of CPA Australia. This assessment scores that registration for anyone who chose it. Make sure your membership is current, and check Immigration New Zealand's own published list before you apply.
5Show an acceptable standard of health: book your medical examination and chest X-rayRequired
Book a medical examination and chest X-ray with a doctor Immigration New Zealand has approved. Not everyone needs both, and which you need depends on how long you plan to stay and where you have been living. Bring the results when you apply.
6Show good character: get a police certificate from each country you have lived inRequired
Get a police certificate from every country where you have spent 12 months or more over the last 10 years, including New Zealand. They must be less than 6 months old when you apply.
7Job offer from an accredited employerRequired
Most New Zealand work and residence pathways require a job offer from an employer accredited by Immigration New Zealand.
How to fulfill: A full-time role (at least 30 hours a week) with an employer New Zealand has accredited, either permanent or on a fixed term of 12 months or more. New Zealand sorts jobs into skill levels 1 to 5: a job at skill level 1 to 3 must pay at least the median wage, and a job at skill level 4 or 5 must pay at least one and a half times it.
8Make sure your English test result is less than 2 years oldRequired
Immigration New Zealand only accepts English test results taken within the last 2 years. If your result is older, or will be older by the time you apply, re-sit the test: this reflects the age of the paperwork, not your English ability.
