Hamilton, Kirikiriroa in te reo Māori: work, study, the visas that let you live there, and free help after you arrive.

This page is about Hamilton in New Zealand's Waikato region, not Hamilton in Ontario, Canada. The city council's name in te reo Māori (the Māori language) is Te kaunihera o Kirikiriroa, and its pages call the city Hamilton Kirikiriroa. The council explains that the site of Hamilton was originally known as Kirikiriroa, a large pā (settlement) on the western side of the Waikato River.
New Zealand has no visa for Hamilton alone. Immigration New Zealand (INZ), the agency that decides visa applications, offers one set of national visas, and settling here means holding one of them while you work or study in the city. For the Accredited Employer Work Visa and the Skilled Migrant Category, a job or job offer is part of the application itself, so it has to come first.
Hamilton is in the Waikato region, and its council is Hamilton City Council.
192,100 people, as Stats NZ estimates for 2025.

Hamilton City Council's economic development page lists the city's key sectors as tech and innovation, logistics, manufacturing, education and healthcare. Manufacturers here work in subsectors including food production, machinery and equipment, metal fabrication, transport equipment and plastics, and the logistics sector draws on the city's closeness to rail lines and expressways. In healthcare, Waikato Hospital works alongside private hospitals and a wide range of diagnostic and specialist services.
Before you rely on a job offer from a Hamilton business, check that it is an accredited employer, which INZ describes as one approved to hire workers from overseas. The official search for accredited employers gives you just one field: type the business's company or trading name, or the full 13-digit New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) that identifies it. You cannot search by town or region, so it cannot produce a list of Hamilton's accredited employers. A business that does not appear may still be accredited, because some employers have chosen not to be published in the results, so ask the employer.
The council describes Hamilton as a centre of learning, science, research and innovation, driven by these public institutions:

Hamilton's city buses are part of BUSIT, the Waikato's public bus network, and most services run to and from the Hamilton Transport Centre, on the corner of Bryce Street and Anglesea Street. BUSIT is part of Waikato Regional Council, which is responsible for planning, tendering, contracting and marketing the region's bus services, while bus companies run them under contract.
Hamilton City Council's welcoming communities page points to "Your guide to Hamilton Kirikiriroa", a booklet the council made with local organisations for new settlers and their families. It covers everyday life, from local services and schools to community groups and support networks. The council was accepted in 2021 into New Zealand's Welcoming Communities programme, which it says aims to help newcomers, including recent migrants, former refugees and international students, feel more supported and included.
Some first steps do not depend on the city. Setting up your life in New Zealand, an INZ page, covers getting a phone, internet and electricity connected, and finding courses if you want to improve your English.
